New knowlegde through case study research
As the social entrepreneurship is gaining momentum especially in Central and Western Europe, discussions and research surrounding the topic have increased. In the bioenergy sector, the challenge lies especially in qualifying and quantifying social enterprises within the sector and also the socioeconomic consequences that social enterprises have.
To tackle these issues, the SECRE project has developed and applied a case study protocol of more than 50 cases of community renewable energy systems and solutions in Europe. Social enterprises and entrepreneurs in the bioenergy sector were interviewed in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Scotland, Ireland and Germany. By analyzing the case study interviews benefits and impacts that social enterprises have on the surrounding society can be recognized. Case studies and summary reports of each case study include detailed analyses of social enterprises & concepts, the socio-economic perspectives as well as positive and negative drivers for each case study. Case study data and gathered results are then utilized in energy and socio-economic scenarios by creating new recommendations and business models for social enterprises working in the bioenergy across the Northern Periphery Programme area.
