“Development and harmonisation of new operational research and assessment procedures for sustainable forest biomass supply”
Objectives of the STSM:
The Latvian State Forestry Research Institute "Silava" will measure productivity of harvesting and forwarding in commercial thinning representing pine and spruce dominant and mixed stands. Two types of harvesting approaches - with short and long crane, forwarding of roundwood using 2 or 3 types of machines from complicated to average and good conditions will be tested. The study will also involve prime cost calculations, evaluation of damages to remaining trees (separately after harvesting and forwarding) and evaluation of soil compaction using a digital penethrologger.
The aim of the STSM is to combine the findings in the COST action with the prime cost calculation of forwarding and harvesting operations, respectively, processing of productivity data. However, evaluation of quality of operations from another perspective would be interesting as well.
The successful applicant will be invited to join the practical field work and data analysis together with colleagues from Silava.
